April 2022 Newsletter

From the Boathouse – LT. Tina Old

The construction of the new Boathouse has been moving forward. The current targeted timeframe for the Boathouse demolition, and subsequent seawall construction is scheduled for April 2022 (though as a government project always subject to change).

The “Temporary Boathouse” will be a modular trailer to be positioned adjacent to the DNR Fisheries. I currently do not have all the operational logistics associated with “Temporary Boathouse”, but as I receive more related specific information, I will relay the information to all of you.  Additionally, I would like to personally thank all of you that have been able to assist with the “Great Scan and Purge” at the Boathouse as we could not have done this without you.

The upcoming boating season may prove to be a challenge for the Marine Division; however, I know with your continued dedicated service we are up for the challenge.

Stay healthy and I’m looking forward to seeing all of you for the 2022 season!

From Commander Bud Fox

Firearms – Ldr. Jack Greer

We are still working to schedule additional firearm qualification dates.  As we did last year, there will be forms available online for you to review in preparation to qualify. There will be forms that you will need to print, fill out, and bring with you to your scheduled session. As much of this year’s course of fire will be similar to 2021, the video that was produced last year by Sgt. Yax, and demonstrated by Deputy Sywak will be available online for your review prior to shooting.

Our course of fire for 2022 will build on the skills learned last year, with the addition of tactics designed to bring our qualification course in line with that of the full-time deputies. The major changes this year will be the addition of threat identification through the use of shoot / no-shoot targets, the addition of a low light shooting stage, increased focus on shooting from behind the barricade, and an expansion of the ten-yard

marksmanship stage from five rounds to ten. This year’s course was shot in the reserve academy completed in November, with satisfying results.

For those of you wanting to get some practice prior to qualifying the good news is that ammunition is available, although it remains a little on the pricy side. This would be a good time to check your night sights and the rest of your equipment. I would encourage you to review the video carefully this year, and as always, I will be happy to try and answer any questions. I also hope to put together a short document to try and give you some additional practice pointers prior to your scheduled qualification date.

As you can imagine, the pandemic continues to be a major factor in our ability to lock in a training schedule. I appreciate your understanding and patience as we try to balance ongoing facility improvements, instructor availability, and the necessity to provide as healthful training environment as possible and still meet our annual training goals. I’m still known to press a trigger occasionally, so with any luck maybe I’ll see you at the range!

As always, the time and effort that each of you spend in support of the Marine Division is appreciated. This is truly a team effort.

Historian – Ldr. Joe Giacherio

The historical committee had their first meeting and will continue to meet frequently in preparation for the new building.  If anyone has any items that might be good for the Marine Division historical wall please send them to the boathouse.  The next meeting is scheduled for April.
